Professor Odd wrote to the national e-list for Writing Across the Curriculum, asking for advice about managing a Fellows-based program at small colleges. At times, such as our current semester, I feel like one of the performers who keeps about 30 fragile plates spinning on the ends of skinny poles. Richmonds program for what we now call Writing Consultants now enters its 21st year.   How we have managed has become a little more daunting recently, with only 3,200 undergraduates and the need to staff 50+ sections with Writing Consultants while keeping a Writing Center open. My post covers a few bedrock principles and recent challenges. The Training Class Must Be Strong: We dont shortchange Consultant training at Richmond. All of them must complete a semester-long course, Eng. 383, that is by invitation of our faculty.   I could rush through 100 new Consultants in a couple of weeks of basic training, but I fear theyd be unethical editors, fixing writers problems but not making them better writers. Faculty would consider the help intellectually lacking, and Im not about to dumb-down our commitment to fundamental ideas of peer work, long established in the field and tested well in our program. I find that recruiting my 36 new Consultants each year, 18 trained each semester, can staff the program. This has worked well at the similar-sized program at Swarthmore, long a model for WAC at Richmond. Except The Busy Student Body Must Notice Us: It is hip to be stressed out and over-committed on this campus. Strike one for staying on student radar, as a program or potential employer. Study abroad, a wonderful opportunity that I want every student to experience, has gradually become nigh universal for our first-semester juniors.   Strike Two. Then there are internships, independent study, summer research, the hum of non-academic but seemingly essential social obligationsStrike Three. For these reasons, over time, more and more students delayed taking Eng. 383 until their third or even fourth years. Having sown this wind for a few years, in May 2013 I reaped the whirlwind, finding about 20 of our trained Consultants walking across the stage in their caps and gowns. Then, this term, another 15 went abroad. Thus we are scrambling to staff 50+ sections and keep the Writing Center open with 37 Consultants. Usually, I employ 50. The Director Must Appeal to Potential Consultants Early and in the Right Way: My doubling-down on recruitment began early this semester. I notified faculty teaching first-year seminars that a crisis was at hand; I would depend upon them to bring me more first-and-second-year recruits. So far, a few are drifting in, but I will appeal as well to the students directly. Paying Consultants well helps, but students want more than a job today. Students at Richmond want a path to a post-collegiate career or graduate school. Working as a Consultant here means a better chance of landing a graduate assistantship or job with a communications focus. I count EBSCO, Penguin, and The National Archives among the employers of recently graduated Consultants. Faculty in all Fields Must Become Partners: I have never felt that putting a writing program in a silo works well. First of all, writing has historically been under-staffed and under-underfunded. Susan Millers sad woman in the basement was more than a brilliant metaphor in her book Textual Carnivals. It was the fact on the ground (and beneath the ground) for a long time. Now that the Humanities themselves are in national crisis, writing programs cannot necessarily count on English departments with diminishing institutional clout for support. Program directors will need to sit down with Mathematicians and Economists and Sociologists, too, to determine local needs, priorities, and resources. These faculty will also serve as recruiters for those new student employees to keep WAC efforts vital. I remain convinced, after more than two decades doing this work (with some very pleasant side trips into educational technology, the design of simulations, and more) that writing programs will thrive because our colleagues and administrators share our concern, if not necessarily our values, about writing instruction. The Directors job, as the public face of writing on campus, is to be certain that the center remains in the Center, or wherever else writing instruction is housed currently. My greatest fear is that other units of a college or university, hungry for influence and budget, could gobble up WAC and Writing Centers. We should not let that happen, since with merger may come a pedagogy we have worked so hard to avoid in our teaching and tutoring.

Monte Carlo simulation is a computerized mathematical technique that allows people to account for risk in quantitative analysis and decision making. The technique is used by professionals in such widely disparate fields as finance, project management, energy, manufacturing, engineering, research and development, insurance, oil gas, transportation, and the environment. Monte Carlo simulation furnishes the decision-maker with a range of possible outcomes and the probabilities they will occur for any choice of action.. It shows the extreme possibilities—the outcomes of going for broke and for the most conservative decision—along with all possible consequences for middle-of-the-road decisions. The technique was first used by scientists working on the atom bomb; it was named for Monte Carlo, the Monaco resort town renowned for its casinos. Since its introduction in World War II, Monte Carlo simulation has been used to model a variety of physical and conceptual systems. How Monte Carlo simulation works Monte Carlo simulation performs risk analysis by building models of possible results by substituting a range of values—aprobability distribution—for any factor that has inherent uncertainty. It then calculates results over and over, each time using a different set of random values from the probability functions. Depending upon the number of uncertainties and the ranges specified for them, a Monte Carlo simulation could involve thousands or tens of thousands of recalculations before it is complete. Monte Carlo simulation produces distributions of possible outcome values. By using probability distributions, variables can have different probabilities of different outcomes occurring. Probability distributions are a much more realistic way of describing uncertainty in variables of a risk analysis. Common probability distributions include: Normal – Or â€Å"bell curve. † The user simply defines the mean or expected value and a standard deviation to describe the variation about the mean. Values in the middle near the mean are most likely to occur. It is symmetric and describes many natural phenomena such as people’s heights. Examples of variables described by normal distributions include inflation rates and energy prices. Lognormal – Values are positively skewed, not symmetric like a normal distribution. It is used to represent values that don’t go below zero but have unlimited positive potential. Examples of variables described by lognormal distributions include real estate property values, stock prices, and oil reserves. Uniform – All values have an equal chance of occurring, and the user simply defines the minimum and maximum. Examples of variables that could be uniformly distributed include manufacturing costs or future sales revenues for a new product. Triangular – The user defines the minimum, most likely, and maximum values. Values around the most likely are more likely to occur. Variables that could be described by a triangular distribution include past sales history per unit of time and inventory levels. PERT- The user defines the minimum, most likely, and maximum values, just like the triangular distribution. Values around the most likely are more likely to occur. However values between the most likely and extremes are more likely to occur than the triangular; that is, the extremes are not as emphasized. An example of the use of a PERT distribution is to describe the duration of a task in a project management model. Discrete – The user defines specific values that may occur and the likelihood of each. An example might be the results of a lawsuit: 20% chance of positive verdict, 30% change of negative verdict, 40% chance of settlement, and 10% chance of mistrial. During a Monte Carlo simulation, values are sampled at random from the input probability distributions. Each set of samples is called an iteration, and the resulting outcome from that sample is recorded. Monte Carlo simulation does this hundreds or thousands of times, and the result is a probability distribution of possible outcomes. In this way, Monte Carlo simulation provides a much more comprehensive view of what may happen. It tells you not only what could happen, but how likely it is to happen. Monte Carlo simulation provides a number of advantages over deterministic, or â€Å"single-point estimate† analysis: Probabilistic Results. Results show not only what could happen, but how likely each outcome is. Graphical Results. Because of the data a Monte Carlo simulation generates, it’s easy to create graphs of different outcomes and their chances of occurrence. This is important for communicating findings to other stakeholders. Sensitivity Analysis. With just a few cases, deterministic analysis makes it difficult to see which variables impact the outcome the most. In Monte Carlo simulation, it’s easy to see which inputs had the biggest effect on bottom-line results. Scenario Analysis: In deterministic models, it’s very difficult to model different combinations of values for different inputs to see the effects of truly different scenarios. Using Monte Carlo simulation, analysts can see exactly which inputs had which values together when certain outcomes occurred. This is invaluable for pursuing further analysis. Correlation of Inputs. In Monte Carlo simulation, it’s possible to model interdependent relationships between input variables. It’s important for accuracy to represent how, in reality, when some factors goes up, others go up or down accordingly. The key is to find a  good balance between your hard work and your outside life. Here are a few strategies on how to do just that.1. Keep one day meeting-free.Lots of companies establish one day a week as â€Å"meeting-free,† where no one is allowed to schedule any kind of mandatory group gathering. If your company doesn’t do this, suggest it to your manager. Setting aside one work day that’s just for you to actually work will do wonders for your productivity. Most of these relationships will inevitably come to a point where one must chose whether to seize the moment and have sex with their partner, or they will set standards ahead of time saying they will not have sex until marriage. Every teen is either on one side of the fence or the other; they either will have premarital sex, or they will abstain. These two stances shed light on why sex is out of control today, what the world thinks about sex, and what religion says about sexual immorality. The facts are evident: teens have sex. It seems almost impossible to calculate the number of teens who are actually having premarital sex, because, of course, they don't wish to confess. Some teens though, have no choice but to confess because their actions lead to severe consequences such as pregnancy. Forty-three Percent of adolescent women become pregnant at least once before age 20 (Internet 1). That fact alone concludes that the choice of waiting for sex is in close running with the choice of not waiting. In the United States alone, more than 2,800 adolescents become pregnant each day. 1,300 of these girls give birth, 1,100 have abortions, and 400 have miscarriages (Internet 1). These astounding facts prove that sex may be considered out of control among teens today. In the olden days, around the Victorian period, sex was far from the topic that it is today. Also, during this time premarital sex was unthinkable. What happened between then and now that caused such an uproar? The world says that sex has become out of control because it was hushed for so long. But, for the last 20 years, sex has most defiantly not been hushed. If hushing up had been the cause of the trouble, ventilation would have set it right. But it has not (Lewis 92). As the world talks more and more about sex, and as the consequences of pregnancy Page 1 decrease through birth control methods, the issue of sex starts getting out of control. Birth control has had a huge impact on the increase of sexual activity. But, it wasn't until the early seventies that it became an issue in America. In 1972 the Supreme Court completely legalized birth control (Corfman 3). Also around this time came the invention of the pill. This wonder drug completely revolutionized the way humans viewed sex. People were no longer afraid of sex since the consequences of pregnancy almost vanished. Intercourse was promoted as an expression of love, and since then has become a casual affair to most of the world. The world view states that intercourse is merely the ultimate way to express love. This statement completely isolates sex from marriage and downsizes it to become almost equal with a kiss which is also an expression of love. All around is heard the saying that sex is nothing to be ashamed of. This cliche is mostly true, but that does not mean sex should be talked about so openly. In fact, talking about the sex in the state that it is now should almost be shameful. C.S. Lewis uses a great illustration to express this point. Lewis says that there is nothing to be ashamed of in enjoying food, but there would be everything to be ashamed of if half the world made food the main interest of their lives and spent time looking at pictures of food and drooling and licking their lips (Lewis 92). As the sexual entertainment industry continues to grow people continue to degrade sex until it reaches the point of being almost meaningless. They view sex in the shameful way that Lewis refers to. Sensitivity analysis is frequently used in capital budgeting for determining how sensitive an NPV analysis is to changes in variable assumptions. While conducting analysis, each variable is fixed except one and by changing this one variable, the effect on NPV or IRR can be viewed. The first step in performing a sensitivity analysis is building a base case scenario. This is typically the NPV using assumptions which are believed to be accurate. From this point various assumptions can be changed which had initially been based on potential assumptions. NPV is then recalculated and the sensitivity of NPV based on the change in assumptions is determined. Scenario Analysis Scenario analysis is a process of analysing decisions by considering alternative possible outcomes. Scenario analysis is designed to see the consequences of an action under different set of factors. Scenario analysis takes sensitivity analysis a step further. Rather than just looking at the sensitivity of the NPV analysis to changes in the variable assumptions, scenario analysis also looks at the probability distribution of the variables. Like sensitivity analysis, scenario analysis starts with the construction of a base case scenario. From there other scenarios are considered known as the ‘best case’ and ‘worst case’ scenario. Probabilities are assigned to the scenarios and computed to arrive at an expected value. Capital Budgeting and Use of Sensitivity and Scenario Analysis Capital budgeting is the process of analysing a company’s investment decisions such as investing in new equipment, machineries, plants, projects and products. This process involves the estimation of the expected cash flows, the calculation of the Net Present Value (NPV) and the calculation of the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of the investment. NPV is defined as the present value of all cash inflows minus the present value of all cash outflows. If NPV is positive, the investment is making money and is thus viable. IRR is defined as the discount rate that makes the NPV zero. If IRR is greater than the opportunity cost of capital then the investment is feasible. There are two obstacles involved in the capital budgeting process. One involves the correct estimation of expected cash flow. The other is the use of correct discount rate also known as the project cost of capital. Capital budgeting is by definition, forward looking. When dealing with expected resources and demands, uncertainty is a major factor. Sensitivity analysis is a statistical tool that determines how consequential deviations from the expected value occur. Capital Budgeting example XYZ Water Filtration Plant needs to construct a new water filtration plant to filter 20 million litre water and deliver to consumers. An assessment should be carried out to evaluate the economics of the project and determine which parameter is sensitive to investment value, also to establish a sales price. Technology in the Classroom Essay example -- Education Teaching

Technology in the Classroom Almost every single occupation in today’s working world is impacted by technology in one form or another. As I have grown as a person and a student, I have noticed the obvious impacts and changes technology is taking on in education. These changes and impacts are both positive and negative to the children, young adults, and adults who are pursuing technological opportunities. In The Art of Fiction, John Gardner said, â€Å"The business of education is to give the student useful information and life-enhancing experience, one largely measurable, the other not†¦Ã¢â‚¬  One of the main reasons technologies are becoming so popular in today’s education is because it is introduced to children at any earlier age than every before. â€Å"Ninety-nine percent of all elementary and secondary schools in the United States have installed computers.†[1] Students are encouraged to research by using the internet for book reports, making banners or signs for science fairs, and typing their paper for an essay. I believe it is important for students to be introduced to this at an early age. I also believe that they get a well grounded understanding of the â€Å"important† reasons to use a computer. So many children get caught up in games, email, chat, and music because they may spend too much time on a computer. These things are okay to an extent, but they should really learn from an early age the true importance of technology in education. Technology is a major focus when discussing the ways to improve schools in the future. Because students are now becoming extremely educated when it comes to technology, school districts are now making it mandatory for teachers to be knowledgeable when it comes to technology, no mat... ...d not just be exposed to computers and the internet without some simple base knowledge. They need to understand the dangers that chat rooms, email, and â€Å"free† sites can have. Along with students, teachers and professors should be aware of what their students are accomplishing while using these various forms of technology. Philosophy of life Essay

In the process of growing up, I have learned that there are an infinite ways to look at how you want to live life and how others live it. When I was young I allowed for my parents to control and greatly influence my beliefs and throughout the years I even allowed my friends to do so as well. Now that I am older I have very different views of life and am only influenced by one source. I’m sure that just like me others around the world also believe the same thing. Nowadays people can even get a degree in philosophy and interpret many ways on how humans should interpret the way we live and life itself and how it came about. Regarding what I have mentioned above, I think that now as a grown up I have lived many experiences in order to form my own philosophy of life. About 3 years ago I was introduced to the Seventh Day Adventist Church. I did research on everything I was being told and history itself proved the bible’s words to be true. I learned many things from the bible and I believe they have made me a better person because of the guidance it has taught me. I strongly believe that most of what is taught by the SDA church I can trust and apply it to my life. Most of it comes the word of God and that is why I feel I can trust it. God is the main source of the philosophy of life I have. The main thing I take from God is his commandments. I base the 10 main commandments he has given this world to my life every single day. I live by them and I like that they always help me out in feeling good about myself and just being good. In my life I have always felt the desire of spiritual growth but I could never find it especially not while I was in a church where the truth was hidden. Finally when I learned about God the way the SDA church taught it I knew I was ready to begin my spiritual growth. see more:personal philosophy of life I feel that by taking the values presented to me by God, I can be sure to live by them every single day of my life until I die. Many things have become clear to me and I’m not scared of what lies ahead in the future for me. I have learned to respect all cultures, religions, and beliefs. Although I may not accept them to be completely and entirely true, just as they would to me, I know that because of my own beliefs they also have the right to be free and believe what they want. I think free will is one of the main aspects of this philosophy and I analyze it every day I live by viewing the people around me. Since the beginning of time people have always had a choice whether to things one way or the other way. Even though there have been people trying to control that freedom, there could have been ways to prevent it merely by just choosing to go against them. I think that by understanding free will is why I am able to cope with others and be able to relate to them much more. Now that I go to a very diverse university I have realized that it is not so hard to live in harmony. I am okay with all these cultures and backgrounds that are found here at the university. Many of my friends here at Cal State are Muslim and follow Islam, a religion very different from mine and yet very similar in some ways. My Muslim friends have seen the way I view on how to live and before they knew I was a Christian believer, they assumed I was Muslim because of the way I lived my life. I think that because I base my life to live it the way God put it down to me is the philosophy most religions also want to follow. I’m glad that people can relate it to them and actually think my philosophy of life is very similar to them. Even though I don’t base my philosophical views on the peers around me I still feel I can easily relate to them. My values are solely based of God’s word and I do not mind the people who think I am obscured for doing that. This goes back to the concept of free will, they can either choose to accept it for good reasons or reject it for bad reasons. The future that I want with this philosophy is so that I can create a peaceful environment for me and those who also value the same philosophical views as me. So far I think I have been able to accomplish that with the peers around me. My friends also notice that because of my views I am able to be a better person. I think that this is the most important thing I could ever accomplish. With the believe that every person is prone to do evil in this world, being able to show people that I am a good person is amazing. The reason that I live a very good life right now encourages me to share the same philosophy to those of my friends who do not follow it. I understand that they can reject it and not want to even consider it. It is a tough thing to do but because we are all free to choose how to live our lives I am just satisfied that I can share the way I can live my life. I thank God every day for giving me the opportunity to live the way he wanted me to live. Every day that I live this way, I am sure that I am pleasing the only important being in my life which is God and is the one who gave it to me. God is the only important subject in my life and I wouldn’t want that to change at all. I love the way I live life and although I am not sure how long I will live, until its end I wish to live it this way. My philosophy of life lies within in the commandments of God and no one can ever change that, no matter how hard they try.

Yin (1993) considered case methodology microscopic because of the limited sampling cases that may lead to an inaccuracy of data. Likewise for interviews, due to the complexity and great detail involved, it is usually time-consuming as each respondent would require 30-45 minutes to answer those questions, in addition of organizing and comparing the data would take up even more time. There is also an underlying question in terms of validity as researcher would not be able to know if the respondents are lying.
